Grantmaking

Our Grants Process is member driven, responsive to community needs and benefits underserved communities in the San Diego region. See below overview of the stages of our annual grantmaking process.

Research

Each fall, our Discovery, Inquiry and Guidelines (DIG) Committee begins researching topics for the next grant cycle. They generally narrow the list to 4-5 topics where our grant funds could have significant impact, always with an eye towards underserved communities, racial equity and gender justice.

Appreciative Inquiry

After a democratic member vote determines our final funding focus are, the Discovery, Inquiry and Guidelines (DIG) Committee sends out a survey to all identified nonprofits engaged in work in our focus area to learn about what is currently being done to address the issues, which communities are most impacted and funding gaps. This information is used to narrow and refine our grant guidelines for the year.

Appreciative Inquiry

LOI

The first stage of our grant selection process is Letters of Inquiry (LOI) which are short, written applications that are less burdensome than full proposals. LOIs are due in November from interested organizations. After training, our members evaluate each LOI and determine which applicant organizations will be invited to submit a full proposal.

LOI

Proposal

In January, we invite organizations selected by our members through the LOI stage to submit a full proposal. The proposal deadline is in February, and our members then receive training and divide into teams to review submitted proposals.

Site Visit

Organizations selected for site visits welcome small teams of SDWF members to their organization for a short visit in April. That team decides whether or not to recommend each nonprofit move forward to the final stage in our grants process – the ballot.

Ballot

Finalist organizations are listed on our ballot, and all SDWF members have an opportunity to vote. Organizations awarded funding become Community Partners and are asked to attend our Annual Grants Celebration in June.

Ballot

Impact

Each Community Partner is assigned two impact liaisons: SDWF members who touch base with the organization a few times over the grant term to highlight the impact of our collaboration. Liaisons collect images and stories from our community partners to amplify their work across our communication channels and social media platforms.
