DESCRIPTION:In June 2023\, SDWF will award unrestricted funding to nonprofit organizations working to combat learning loss and educational disparities for children aged 0-8 in San Diego County. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, November 8th as we partner with San Diego Foundation (SDF) staff to learn about grantmaking best practices in the early childhood education space. \nSDF Manager of Community Impact\, Tori Calisch\, will provide hands-on opportunities to review applications and grants criteria from past SDF grant cycles. Due to the sensitive nature of grant applications\, this event will only be open to current SDWF members. \nAbout Tori Calisch: \nAs Manager\, Community Impact\, Victoria “Tori” Nelson Calisch supports the Early Childhood Initiative\, working to increase access to affordable\, quality early education and care for children in San Diego County. Her focus is to ensure that all young children ages 0-5\, their families and their providers have equitable access to support to thrive in school and beyond. Prior to this role\, Tori served as San Diego Foundation’s Thomas Murphy Fellow\, Early Childhood Initiative. \nTori’s previous professional experience includes five years of United Way work experience with the United Way of Northeast Florida\, United Way of Fresno and United Way of San Diego. There\, she combined major fundraising with community development work in early childhood success\, economic self-sufficiency and women in leadership. Additionally\, Tori brings more than fifteen years of volunteer leadership serving children and military families with a focus on literacy\, education and community grants. She currently volunteers as a National Delegate for Girl Scouts San Diego as well as a Brownie/Junior Girl Scout Troop leader. \nTori earned her undergraduate degree in Economics from Wellesley College and her Master’s in Nonprofit Administration from University of Notre Dame\’s Mendoza College of Business. \nMust register in advance to receive Zoom link.

He previously worked at the Wall Street Journal\, where he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize\, and as editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post. \nThe conversation will be moderated by Steven P. SUMMARY:Aging in Poverty: SDWF Community Partner Connection Featuring Serving Seniors
DESCRIPTION:The number of San Diego County residents experiencing homelessness has risen steadily in the last decade. The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the situation. As a result\, first-time homelessness in San Diego doubled in 2020.    \nWhat’s often not discussed is that a significant portion of the region’s homeless population are older adults. In 2020\, one out of every four unsheltered San Diego County residents were adults age 55 and over.  Among San Diego’s unsheltered seniors\, 88% became homeless in San Diego and 43% are experiencing homelessness for the first time in their lives.   \nJoin us on Wednesday\, May 18 as we partner with SDWF grant recipient\, Serving Seniors\, to learn more about their efforts to end senior homelessness in San Diego County. \nAll are welcome.
